how to clean suede jacket

Suede may be a timeless fabric, but the nubby, fuzzy leather is incredibly easy to damage. Perhaps you've seen the Seinfeld episode wherein Jerry buys an expensive suede jacket, and it's ruined by snow. Maybe back in the day, you convinced your mother that you needed a suede skirt for rush week at college, and you only got to wear it once before it was destroyed by trashcan punch. And then there are the suede shoes that we buy after making ourselves promises of Scotchgarding, only to forget, roll the dice, and end up stepping in a puddle. But hang on! There's hope. Just like you can unshrink a sweater, you can sometimes destain your suede. And that's good news. Because while you can walk around in sneakers all day long, you shouldn't ever deprive yourself of some comfy suede loafers or boots.

What is suede?

So, we all know what suede is, but we might have trouble defining it. The soft material is made from the underside of the skin of a lamb, cow, goat, or deer. The word "suede" comes from the French term "gants de Sude," meaning "gloves from Sweden." Because of its texture, it easily absorbs liquids and dirt.

What's the best way to clean suede?

When you buy your suede jacket, boots, purse, or skirt, the first thing you should do while it's still clean is protect it with a special suede protecting spray. (Then avoid wearing those pieces in the rain if at all possible.)

Can I use vinegar to clean suede?`

Yes! Unlike water, vinegar and rubbing alcohol don't stain suede. Weird, right? Pour a little white vinegar on the spot and rub with a clean cloth. While we can't promise that it will remove trashcan punch, it's pretty effective when it comes to removing dirt, salt, and other common staining agents.

How do I get water stains out of suede?

If the dreaded happens and you get suede wet, allow the suede piece to dry completely. Once it's totally dry, use a suede brush or terrycloth towel to rub the nap. If this doesn't work, try a white eraser. (Don't even think about using the pink one!) You can also use sandpaper or an emory board to remove water marks.
